Primary foods feed us, but they don't come on a fork. They are elements like an inspiring career, a meaningful spiritual practice, regular and enjoyable physical activity and honest and open relationships. They constitute primary food and what satiates the soul and hunger for living.
Get into a time machine and go to a time when you were passionately in love. Everything was exciting and you were always happy, walking around with a silly grin on your face. Now remember a time when you were deeply involved in an exciting project. You believed in what you were doing and felt confident and stimulated. Time seemed to stop. In both cases, the outside world faded away. Sometimes, you would even forget to eat and someone had to come by and remind you.
We all thrive on primary food, like when deeply in love or working passionately on a project. We thrive on that connection to something outside our own body. It's what Eastern culture refers to energy: we are constantly looking to connect with this outside force. It comes to us in the form of nature, love or passion, among other things, but we must identify it and satisfy it.
The fun, excitement and love of daily life have the power to feed us so that food becomes secondary. This is a key step in understanding your cravings and reasons for binging. The more primary food we receive, the less we depend upon secondary foods. The opposite is also true. The more we fill ourselves with secondary foods, the less we are able to recognize and receive the primary foods we so desperately desire.
Do you have enough primary Food filling your life? How can I help you squeeze in more?!?
